Turning on PGP two-factor login without locking yourself out

Most lockouts happen because of an untested key, not because of the feature itself.

Two-factor login · updated

1Upload your public key

Paste your public key, never the private one, into the account security settings.

2Test before enforcing

Most sites ask you to decrypt a test message before enabling 2FA. Do it, and confirm the code is accepted.

3Check your backup

Make sure your private key backup and passphrase work on a second device or after a restore.

4Mind the expiry date

Extend your key before it expires and update it on the site, or you may be unable to decrypt future challenges.

Lesson summary

Upload the public key, pass the test challenge and confirm your backup before enforcing 2FA.
