PGP School · Lesson 13 of 13

Losing a PGP key: backups you should have made yesterday

A key without a backup is one hardware failure away from disappearing.

Mistakes to avoid · updated

1What to back up

The private key export, the revocation certificate and a note of the fingerprint.

2Where to keep it

On encrypted offline storage such as a USB stick kept somewhere safe, separate from your everyday device.

3Test the backup

Once, restore it on another machine or in a fresh user account to make sure it actually works.

4Update after changes

Repeat the backup whenever you extend the expiry date or add a new subkey.

Lesson summary

Back up the private key and revocation certificate offline, and test the backup once.
