PGP School · Lesson 4 of 13

Creating your first PGP key pair, step by step

Ten minutes now gives you a key you can use for years.

Keys and fingerprints · updated

1Start the wizard

In Kleopatra choose New Key Pair, or run gpg --full-generate-key. A pseudonym is fine; you do not need your real name.

2Pick sensible settings

Modern defaults such as ed25519/cv25519 are a good choice. Set an expiry date, for example two years, so the key does not live forever by accident.

3Choose a strong passphrase

Use several random words. Store the passphrase in your password manager, not on a sticky note.

4Make a backup and a revocation certificate

Export a backup of the private key to encrypted offline storage and keep the revocation certificate the tool generates.

Lesson summary

Use modern defaults, set an expiry date, choose a strong passphrase and back the key up offline.
